South Plainfield is a Borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough population was 23,385.
South Plainfield was incorporated by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 10, 1926, from portions of Piscataway Township, based on the results of a referendum passed on April 6, 1926.[7]

South Plainfield is located at (40.580703, -74.414015).[8] According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 8.4 square miles (21.7 km2), of which, 8.4 square miles (21.7 km2) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km2) of it (0.48%) is water. South Plainfield is bordered by Piscataway on the south and west, Edison on the east, and Plainfield on the north.

As of the census[4] of 2010, there were 23,385 people, 7,151 households, and 5,856 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,609.8 people per square mile (1,007.3/km2). There were 7,307 housing units at an average density of 874.3 per square mile (337.5/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 77.74% White, 8.56% African American, 0.22% Native American, 7.57% Asian, 3.48% from other races, and 2.42% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.66% of the population.
There were 7,151 households out of which 37.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.8% were married couples living together, 10.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 18.1% were non-families. 15.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.01 and the average family size was 3.35.
In the borough the population was spread out with 25.1% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.6 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $67,466, and the median income for a family was $72,745 (these figures had risen to $88,425 and $92,817 respectively as of a 2007 estimate).[10] Males had a median income of $47,465 versus $34,329 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $25,270. About 2.3% of families and 3.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.7% of those under age 18 and 4.4% of those age 65 or over.
South Plainfield is governed under the Borough form of New Jersey municipal government. The government consists of a Mayor and a Borough Council comprising six council members, with all positions elected at large. A Mayor is elected directly by the voters to a four-year term of office and only votes in case of a tie on the council. The Borough Council consists of six members elected to serve three-year terms on a staggered basis, with two seats coming up for election each year.[1]
As of 2011[update], the Mayor of South Plainfield is Matthew P. Anesh (R). Members of the South Plainfield Borough Council are Council President Raymond Rusnak (R), Alex Barletta (R), Robert Bengivenga (R), Chrissy Buteas (D), Timothy McConville (R) and Franky Salerno (D).[11]
South Plainfield is in the Seventh Congressional District and is part of New Jersey's 18th state legislative district.[12]
New Jersey's Seventh Congressional District is represented by Leonard Lance (R, Clinton Township). New Jersey is represented in the United States Senate by Frank Lautenberg (D, Cliffside Park) and Bob Menendez (D, Hoboken).
18th Legislative District of the New Jersey Legislature, which is represented in the New Jersey Senate by Barbara Buono (D, Metuchen) and in the New Jersey General Assembly by Peter J. Barnes III (D, Edison) and Patrick J. Diegnan (D, South Plainfield).[13] The Governor of New Jersey is Chris Christie (R, Mendham).[14] The Lieutenant Governor of New Jersey is Kim Guadagno (R, Monmouth Beach).[15]
Middlesex County is governed by a Board of Chosen Freeholders, whose seven members are elected at-large to serve three-year terms of office on a staggered basis, with two or three seats coming up for election each year. As of 2010 , Middlesex County's Freeholders are Freeholder Director Christopher D. Rafano (South River), Freeholder Deputy Director Ronald G. Rios (Carteret), Carol Barrett Ballante (Monmouth Junction), Stephen J. "Pete" Dalina (Fords), H. James Polos (Highland Park), Mildred Scott (Piscataway) and Blanquita B. Valenti (New Brunswick). Constitutional officers are County Clerk Elaine M. Flynn (Old Bridge Township), Sheriff Mildred S. Scott (Piscataway) and Surrogate Kevin J. Hoagland (New Brunswick).[16]
The South Plainfield Public Schools serve students in prekindergarten through twelfth grade. The schools in the district (with 2008-09 enrollment data from the National Center for Education Statistics).[17] are Roosevelt Preschool (36 students) for PreK, four K-4 elementary schools — Franklin Elementary School (327), John F. Kennedy Elementary School (272), John E. Riley Elementary School (313) and Roosevelt Elementary School (373) — Grant Elementary School for grades 5 & 6 (575), South Plainfield Middle School for grades 7 and 8 (593) and South Plainfield High School for grades 9-12 (1,219).
